Posted on Tue, 15 Sep 2015
Question: My son is 20 years old and for the past 10 days or so he has been saying that he feels like his testicles are swollen. Today he said its hard for him to walk. He has not masterbated in this time frame. When he talks to a girl in a general conversation and she will say something sweet he feels his penis getting hard. This has never happened to him before and he also feels like he has to go urinate but not much comes out. we are very concerned. please help.

Brief Answer:
A possible mild infection might be there, please consult doctor immediately

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Swelling in testis might occur due to mild inflammation. It is mentioned that the symptoms developed in the last ten days and your son is finding it difficult to walk, therefore an infection as the primary cause of the swelling and discomfort is to be ruled out.

2. It will be important to get a clinical examination done of the testis and then if required an ultrasound scan might be required to know if there is any problem inside the testis. The blood flow to the testis is also important to evaluate.

3. The other point about feeling a hard penis when talking nicely with a girl is a normal male arousal behavior. This is part of normal reaction in a male when a girl talks sweetly. Please do not worry about this point.

Inability to pass urine might also be due to an infection.

In conclusion, please take your son to the doctor and have his testis examined clinically. Most likely it might be a mild infection which will heal with medicines. However an ultrasound scan might be done if required to study the testis and its blood flow.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

He is able to pass urine without pain. Is it normal to have an infection of the testicles? And what causes this infection?

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Testis infection is not very common but might affect young men like your son once in a while.

2. There are many causes for a testis infection including using public washrooms, sharing towels and inner clothes and scratching the scrotum skin and causing infection.

2. If he is able to pass urine without pain then it is not an urinary infection.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

So when I take him in to the doctor, what type of doctor should I look for or do I need to take him to the er, because on Saturdays all the doctors here are closed. He wants to not have this problem anymore.
