What Causes Swelling Of Knee After Playing Soccer With History Of Knee Injuries?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 May 2014
Question: Hey
I play soccer on a high level and hopefully will do for some years.
But I have problems with my left knee.
I have a bit of a long history with injury in my left knee.
In 2008 I got an ACL tear ( got a reconstruction 1 month later). When I got back to soccer, about a year later, I got a meniscus injury in the same knee and the doctor had to remove 30% of the medial meniscus. Even though I have had this injuries, I have been able to play soccer on a high level for some years now. Until now. My knee swells up after every match or training. I hurts around patella, but most on the medial side. I can also feel pain when I do nothing (sitting or laying down). I have big problems with getting down on me knees and it hurts alot if I am standing straight with my bodyweight on my weak knee.

What do you think it can be ?
I am so affraid of that it might be arthrosis. Is there anything to do if it is arthrosis ?.

Brief Answer:
MRI is recommended to find out the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
After going through your suffering few possibilities comes to my mind like synovitis (Inflammation of membrane lining the joint), chodromalcia patellae that is softening of undersurface of patella along with changes in the articular surface of knee which you have mentioned as arthrosis. This can be best assessed by MRI investigation.
What about other joints, are they functioning normally? Please tell in the follow up query. Meanwhile you may continue with the exercises like quadriceps strengthening, swimming; straight leg rising will help in improving the muscle strength around the knee and will help in decreasing pain.
My advice would be take glucosamine for your knee osteoarthritis, the recommended dose of glucosamine sulphate is 1500mg and chondroitin sulphate is 800-1200mg daily in divides doses. Glucosamine by nutralite is a good brand and with balanced composition. This is usually given for 3 months and then 6 months off after there is symptomatic improvement. This is not a pain killer so additional medicines are required for pain control and optimum joint activity.
You may have injection synvisc which adds to lubrication of joint and these are given inside the joint. You may discuss with your local doctor.

In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
Regards
Take care

Thanks for your answer.
Yes, other joints are functioning normally. Is it making the injury worse if I continue to play soccer (as much as the pain and swelling allows me to) until I get an MRI investigation ?

Brief Answer:
If possible take a break for few days

Detailed Answer:
Hi
It’s good to see you
If possible and your passion for soccer allows you, my advice would be, take a break for few days until and unless we find out the cause of your suffering. But you may continue with the hamstring and quadriceps exercises for knee along with hot water fomentation and pain killer like Ibuprofen and other food supplements as discussed earlier. You should think in the long run.
Hope this helps.
Take care
