Brief Answer:
Can be due to arthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain and swelling in the middle finger only can be due to arthritis or a mild tendonitis. A mild infection in the area is also possible. An X-ray of the finger will help in proper diagnosis. Till then she needs to take a mild pain killer and an oral antibiotic for any possible infection. Keeping the finger immobilized with the help of strapping will help in an early recovery.
You can consult an orthopedician for proper prescriptions after a direct examination.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Avoid applying an ointment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Hot pack can help. Rubbing of ointment is not advisable. Get an X-ray first and a close examination is needed to rule out an infection. Blood investigations will also be needed like TLC, DLC, ESR, Uric acid, Blood glucose, etc.
Hope my answer is helpful.
