What Causes Swelling In Middle And Ring Fingers After Index Flexor Tendon Repair?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: I had an index flexor tendon repair surgery three months ago, the same day I was injured. Everything went great with the injured finger. One month post-op, the middle and ring fingers started to swell around the nails (from the tip to the first nuckle). A month later, I started to see some discharges coming from the base of the nails (clear to yellow in color). And whenever I press on the swollen area to empty the discharges, I see some blood coming out. Doing that more often, the ring figer got better and the discharges stopped, but the middle finger is still the same.
I went to my surgeon and he prescribed a topical antibiotic ointment, that improved the swelling but not the discharges.
Is that a sign of infection that requires an action?

Brief Answer:
It is due to infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the images attached. The discharge from the middle finger and the swelling is suggestive of an infection in the area. It is best to start with broad spectrum oral antibiotics and do press the swollen area to drain out all the discharge daily. Gradually the infection will subside. You can get the proper antibiotic prescribed from your physician.
I hope this answers your query.
