What Causes Swelling In Leg And Foot With Normal Ultrasound?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: My husband had two ultra sounds two weeks ago on his aorta and his leg. He has swelling in his right leg and foot. No blood clots were found and his doc said to wear compression socks. The swelling got better for a while but it is back. Could walking on a treadmill be beneficial...then raise his leg after for a while. He did have a triple by-pass 8 years ago and he has a scare where they took a vein out of his right leg. It is starting to ache once in a while. What say you?.....thanks.

Brief Answer:
Due to leaking vein valves

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
It is good news that he does not have a blood clot in the vein which is dangerous.
His leg is swollen because the valves in the vein are leaking. Compression stocking will help to empty the veins and reduce the swelling.
It has to be worn all time except when lying down.
I give my patients a medicine calcium dobesilate to help improve the tone of the veins and improve blood return.

Using a laser termometer I find the temp of the leg with the swollen foot is around 5 deg (F) higher than the other leg at a point about 6 inches above the ankle. Is this consistent with leake valves or is something else going on?

Brief Answer:
Maybe infection or clot

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If the temperature is 5 degrees more than the other leg, it may be due to an infection or a clot.
Please see your doctor without delay. Visit ER if he can't get an early appointment.
