Posted on Tue, 22 Jul 2014
Question: Thank you. Was stung by bee (stepped on it). Got my one toe. Really hurt but just a little swollen. That was Monday. Last night (Tuesday) I woke up during the night with terrible itch on that toe. This morning swollen a bit, reddish and still itchy. I took half a Benedril and it seems to be feeling slightly better. Anything I should watch out for? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Insect bite reaction, take antihistamines

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same .
Now you seem to have developed vector dermatitis which is basically a skin reaction to insect bite.
Since it is an allergic reaction, you need to take a regular course of oral antihistamines . You can either take benadryl in the adult dosage three to four times daily or you can take something like tablet claritin once a day . In addition, application of a topical steroid cream like cortisone cream over the affected areas twice a day will help in early treatment of the allergic reaction .
Avoid application of any other cream or oil over it .

Brief Answer:
Treatment of vector dermatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
You might need to take benadryl regularly for atleast three days.
If even after three days, the swelling or irritation tends to persist or increase, then you might need to see a doctor. Ruling out associated infection and consideration of the need for steroids and antibiotics might be necessary then.
But in most cases, only oral antihistamine along with topical steroid agents suffice .
