What Causes Sudden Weight Gain, Neck Pain And Headache?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 May 2014
Question: Hi I was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago. Very strange thing occurred, I have gained 9 lbs since the accident. I weighed 160 (5'8"), and now I am 169! I noticed it the next day after the accident, when I put on my pants-which were always baggy, now are snug. I weighed myself, and yes within 24hrs I gained the weight. Also, 2 wks into this ordeal-at work when I sit at the computer or sit for awhile in a meeting, my neck has a 'cool burn' sensation-at the base of my neck/top of spine area. I also have a weird headache like pain that radiates up one side. I did tell the Dr. I had a few dizzy spells and inability to focus the first week. She did not say anything about it-just said you will feel sore for awhile. It is just now I am able to focus somewhat at my job. I only had the one follow-up visit, should I go in again for another? Thank you in advance for your help. XXXXX

Brief Answer: Needs some more investigations to rule out few con Detailed Answer: Hi XXXX ! Good morning. I am DR Shareef answering your query. If I were your doctor, I would advise you for a thyroid function test, an ultrasound of abdomen, and a CT scan of head to rule out hypothyroidism which could result from the stress of the accident with increase in your weight, to rule out a incidental undetected PCOD which could have similar effect, and to exclude any undetected slowly developing intracranial organic pathology following the accident giving rise to the headache and the dizzy spells respectively. I would also record a routine blood pressure of yours along with a routine general examination and a blood sugar, and CBC blood tests as a base line. Further management would depend on the results of a physical examination and reports of the investigations done so far. Till that I would advise you to go for a regular routine exercise programme within your medical fitness limits, to have a balanced diet without much fat and oil in it and go for more of roughage and enough liquids. I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts. Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
