What Causes Sudden Tingling In All Four Limbs?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: Hello- I have been having sudden tingling in my hands and feet every time I have a near miss such as tripping on the sidewalk, something hits me, or I have to brake suddenly while driving. It has become more frequent in the last week with increased tingling when I am very hot or standing in the sun. Would this be something to see a neurologist for?

Brief Answer:
Anxiety, carpal tunnel syndrome

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

You shouldn't panic due to those symptoms, such tingling in all 4 limbs is usually not related to nervous system lesions but to anxiety. The fact they appear after those situations you describe reinforces that.
So if the symptoms persist I would start by consulting first your primary physician. Some routine blood tests are recommended to screen for issues like thyroid dysfunction or electrolyte abnormalities which could be related to anxiety and such symptoms.

One issue which might not be related to anxiety is that numbness involving only those 3 left hand fingers, that distribution could be in the setting of carpal tunnel syndrome, easily diagnosed through physical exam and nerve conduction study.
