What Causes Sudden Numbness And Weakness In The Leg?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Dec 2016
Question: I had an abrupt onset of right leg numbness while driving and had to physically pick my leg up to get it off the gas peddle. This happened 2 hours ago. Always have had toe movement and good leg ROM and CMS. I just don't have any muscle strength. I am 28 years old no significant health problems. I did fall on Tuesday and landed on my right hip but didn't notice any problems until this evening when I pushed in on my right hip area I felt pain ,but I don't have any pain if I do not push in on my right hip. Feels like there is a 50 pd weight hanging off my ankle. Feels like my right leg would just fall to the lateral side if it was not attached. Good pulse good color good temperature. I believe I do have a sinus infection going on related to purulent nasal drainage and have not felt well today. My dizziness and headache have gotten worse since my muscle tone was lost in my leg.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
The symptoms of the query are highly suggestive of a nerve related problem.
There is numbness and weakness of the right leg.
There is a history of trauma.
There is a high possibility that the spinal cord or the radicle arising from it that supplies the leg is getting compressed.
The cause of compression is likely to be the trauma to the right hip.
One other possibility is damage to the nerve plexus that supplies the leg.

It will need a detailed examination by a neurosurgeon dealing with spine cases since one can obviously not examine on this forum.

I would suggest testing with an MRI spine and NCS of both lower limbs.
Please do let us know the further reports so I may be able to help you further.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. Please feel free to contact us for further information.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal
