What Causes Sudden Loss Of Weight Inspite Of Being On Ciprofloxacin?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: Does a muscle tear in my right thigh cause weight loss? I was prescribed 6 cipro antibiotics in November for a bacteria infection. It cleared up the dirreah infection but I ended up with terrible muscle pain in my left thigh and I started losing weight.
Since December 10 I have lost 15 pounds. I have had many tests but I am still losing
weight. How can I stop losing weight?

Brief Answer:
No, muscle tear causes no weight loss.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

Ciprofloxacin would nit cause a continued drop in weight. This diarrhea may have been caused by a disease condition that may be responsible for weight loss. The muscle tear or this drug cannot explain this. I will suggest that your doctors evaluate you for weight loss and totally disregard the possibility that the muscle tear or drugs could be the reason for this. The tear and drugs are more of distractions and not helping to identify the definite cause of this weight loss.
Truth be told, a muscle tear or ciprofloxacin would not cause continued weight loss. If your doctors keep hanging unto these are possible reasons for the weight loss, they may keep ignoring the real cause.

Weight loss in an elderly needs to be investigated properly. Diarrhea may have suggested a digestive pathology that needs more investigation like malabsorption, digestion, or something else that may explain weight loss and not the drug and muscle tear. Besides, ciprofloxacin damages tendons and ligaments and not muscles.

I still maintain you eat healthy and balance. Explore common causes of weight loss in elderly and address them. Ask your doctors to stop focusing on unlikely causes like the drug and muscle tear unless this ha suppressed your appetite.

For now, eat healthy including fruits, vegetables and enough protein intake. Besides, how severe is this pain and how well is your nutrition compared to before?

I hope this helps. I wish you well and hope to hear more from you.
