Brief Answer:
Please take him to the ER.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

The symptoms you are describing of intermittent visual loss and black spots can be caused by a number of things, but the most important and serious cause is a stroke. The symptoms can also be caused by a detaching retina.

So I would strongly advise that he go in to the ER now to be evaluated for neurological causes or retinal causes of these symptoms.

I hope this information helps and that he is better soon.
