What Causes Strange Abdominal Pain And Spasms After Eating Food?

Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: I've been experiencing strange abdominal pain and sometimes spasms hours after I eat. Could an upper GI series explain why I'm having this discomfort?
It's in the ULQ of my abdomen. Endoscopy showed mild inflammation in the esophagus and Colonoscopy showed some polyps which were removed and benign. Other than that normal.

Brief Answer:
IBS/pancreas /cholecyst issues to rule out

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Before running into final conclusions, I need to know if you are also having problems with bowel movements. Sometimes, IBS is associated with alternate constipation and diarrhea.

Next, I need to know if you have run abdominal ultrasound. If you have any report, please send me a copy as I need to know about the pancreas and biliary tract. Upload reports on right side of your dash board.

For the moment, I advise to use antispasmodic drugs to ease the pain.

Looking forward to have the requested information in!

Hello Dr Shesu -
Thank you for your reply! I did have an abdominal ultrasound and abdominal MRI and the pancreas indication was normal so was the gall bladder and bile ducts. My GI Doc seems to think I have IBS as well. I've had diarrhea in the past but now I'm more constipated. Yes, I do have an anti-spasmodic called Bentyl.

Do you think further testing on the pancreas shld be done or is an abdominal US pretty conclusive? The CT scan of the abdomen with contrast didn't really show anything. I wish I could download the reports. I have no scanner at the moment.

Brief Answer:
I recommend to measure pancreatic enzymes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

It's a good thing that pancreas and gallbladder were normal on abdominal ultrasound and MRI. This will exlude any problem. However to be more accurate I would suggest to do the measurement of blood concentration of amylase and lipase.

If this result ok than you most likely have IBS and all the efforts should be made to relief from constipation and abdominal discomfort.

I would like to recommend the following actions:
- Drink plenty of water
- avoid spicy foods.
- eat a healthy diet reach on fibers such as those found on vegetables and fruits.
- use prebiotics
- use spasmolytic
- use lactulose oils to soften your stools
This measures are of help in dealing with constipation in patients with IBS.

Wish you health!
