What Causes Stool Discolouration Post Colonoscopy?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Nov 2015
Question: I have been on metronidazole for 5 days now after my colonoscopy. I have a soft dark tar like stool every time I go to the bathroom. I am afraid that I might have bleeding from the colon. The doctor took photos of my colon and it looks fine except that I have plenty of diverticuli. One has puss on it. Also, I'm taking Cipro along with the other meds. Does the metronidazole cause this tar like stool and diarrhea?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!

You are reporting to have tar like stools and diarrhea on treatment with metronidazole.
Yes, metronidazole can cause tarry stools. So your symptoms may be related with metronidazole use. Please discuss with your physician to stop it.

With regards bleeding from colon, it's symptoms are red blood with stools and not black stools.
Black stools may be related with stomach bleeding. In cases of stomach bleeding you should have other symptoms like :
- fatigue
- low blood presure
- characteristic diarrhea smell( melena)

Otherwise you can send me a photo of your stools or perform fecal occult blood test plus blood work to rule out GI bleeding.

Meantime I suggest doing:
- use plenty of water
- use probiotics
- eat yougurt
- you can use loperamide in cases when you are in public.
Hope it was helpful to you !
