What Causes Stomach Pain Along With Elevated WBC Count In Children?

Question: my 11 yr. old grandson has been complaining of stomach area pains and blood work showed higher than normal white count. no n&v, no fever, xray normal. any ideas/

Hello.

The abdominal pain that you described could be due to a small kidney stone. It could also be due to gastritis/GERD. If the pain is on the left side and is below or at the level of the navel then it can also be a case of diverticulitis. If the pain is above the level of the navel on the left side and is associated with left flank tenderness then a UTI can also be the cause. If there is a history of constipation then stool softeners should be advised. PPIs like esomeprazole can be given along with anti spasmodic like hyoscine butylbromide to see for improvement, empirically. Urine R/E, stool for ova and parasite , stool R/E, ultrasound abdomen pelvis should be done to rule out/confirm possible causes, in consult with your doctor. You may discuss these options with your doctor.
