What Causes Stomach Discomfort, Frequent BM And Excessive Gas After A Gastric Bypass?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 Apr 2016
Question: I have had a gastric bypass in 2013 and while overall it has been fine, I have been having concerns for over a week now. Every time I eat I have discomfort in my left abdomen and my bowels move a lot. I have to frequently go to the toilet almost every time I eat and I have a lot of gas and burping. I was suggested to undergo a colonoscopy and gastroscopy, however I do not know how much this show and prove useful after a gastric bypass and do not know what it could be. Symptoms: gas, burping, frequent stool release however diahrea infrequent, bowel noise after food, abdominal discomfort but not unbearable pain.

Brief Answer:
Dumping Syndrome -Post Gastric By-Pass Surgery/ Under Evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear !! Thanks for your query to HCM.
Read and Reviewed facts of your query in context to health issues you have.
All theses symptoms suggest the dumping syndrome, from direct loading of the small intestine-without forming it in to chyme by the digestive enzymes, which are by passed from stomach to small intestines directly by the gastric bypass you had lately in 2013.
This trouble started in last week, seems to be either from food induced bowel infection / and or from a changed food style since last 10 days or so.

Remedy Suggested-
Consult GI Surgeon to check out the blind loop infection which may be causing enteritis.Just a clinical examination from GI Surgeon / and Stool examination for Ova/ Cyst to rule out the -Amoebiasis or Girdiasis / or Cl.Difficile mild infection ,which if confirmed needs to be treated by
Be on Liquid puries / porridges with low Carbohydrates is the basis of this health issue treatment.
Tab Ciplox +Metronidazole x 5 days time.
Tab PPI- Pantoprazole +Domperidone to control enteric paresis with biliary regurge causing gastritis x 2 weeks
Tab Imodium x 5 days time
Cap Sporlac Ds- x 10 days time to normalize the flora
Vit B12 and Folic Acid 50 mg and Vit D3 with Calcium Tablets to recoup is suggested with this as you recover from the bowel irritability with dumping effect lately.
Yogurt/ and or skimmed butter Milk to control the disturbed bacterial flora.

Diet suggested and eating habits-
-No Sugars / More of proteins / Less of oils to be chewed meticulously, would resolve your health issue over next weeks time and would stabilize the fluid imbalance over next 2-3 weeks.
Change to Small feeds with Low Carbo.
Chewing for long time to make it chyme in mouth before swallowing would reduce this dumping effect over last 1 week time.

Hope this would help you to plan further treatment with your GI surgeon attending you there.

Welcome for any further query in this regard.

Good day !!

Are the medicine you suggested to be taken only if there is a bacteria shown in the stool test and also can dumping syndrome cause abdominal uncomfort and pain even when not eating?

Brief Answer:
Consider taking it ....to resolve the bloating and discomfort.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear !! Thanks for the updates.
No need to wait till stool test reports. The test report would only confirm or rule out the causing bacteria and parasite infestations. You would get relief if you take suggested medicines, even without stool test report.
But Try to start medicines after giving Stool for Testing.

If you have more bloating, I would sugest Simethicone(OTC) 2-4 times a day, with cover from your doctors.
Its the eating of Carbo diet loads with solid food, which is directly entering in small intestines, which causes the dumping syndrome
.So avoid high Carbo diet,
and chew many times - high protein, small bolus intake- each time in to soft chyme to reduce dumping effects.
Thus Dumping would not occur if you reduce on intakes to minimum as suggested in last and this reply.

Hope this would resolve your health issues and would give you relief in a day or two period.

Welcome for any further query in this regard 24 x 7 to help you out of this health issue.

Good Day !!
