What Causes Stabbing Pain On Left Side Of Chest?

Question: Hi I'm a 25 year old male and for the past year or so I've had these odd sharp stabbing chest pains that always occur on the left side of my chest near the heart. The pains are very brief, only lasting about 1-3seconds, and gone. but what worries me is that they can go on all day happening about 3 -5 times per hour. But then there will be days I don't get any pains. But I do get them every week. And it worries me because it's near the heart. Once in a while I will get a strong cramp-like squeeze in my heart area that last a second maybe 2 and I can feel it travel through both arms. It strong, it causes me to blink and causes muscles/nerves in my arms to tense, but it's very short, only lasting second. I went to the doctor and I got an ekg done and everything was fine. He said it might be due to anxiety and prescribed me hydroxyzine hcl 25 mg. I am to take 3 times a day but haven't been because I get very very sleepy with these. He ordered blood tests which I am going to take next week. My doctor said it is very rare for someone mY age to have heart problems, and that my blood pressure was very good. I get worried though because my pains are near my heart, I also had an aunt die at 25 due to heart problems, my mother had a small stroke around 50, my father hasn't had any heart related issues. I would like to get a second opinion rather these sharp pains may be heart related or back related as sometimes I feel the pain in my back. I also get regular muscle/nerve twitches/ spasms I don't know if this will help. Thanks in advanced, your opinion is very much valued

Detailed Answer:
hello dear,
I can understand the stress you must be through.
As I can see, your main complain is of chest pain radiating to arm, with no abnormality on EcG.
I would need to know if
1) is it associated with dizziness, vomiting?
2) the pain starts in exertion or on rest?
3) any particular stituations that triggers pain?
4) complains of low self confidence?
5) excessive working or thinking? problem in concentration at work or studies?

Anwers to these questions will help greatly to arrive at specific diagnosis.

kindly reply,

My pains aren't associated with dizziness or vomiting. I've noticed the pain happens at rest or I can be walking around, I haven't really noticed it during physical activities. It's difficult for me to determine what triggers my pain due to the fact that it happens at any given time of the day regardless of what I'm doing, one thing I do notice is that it happens when I'm on a full stomach, but i know it's not heart burn because Its not really a long burn, it's a very short sharp stabbing pain, that sometimes radiates to the inner part of my arm, by the funny bone. I'm confident with my self. I do think a lot throughout the day, especially when I get these pains my mind is all over the place. Some days I get them multiple times throughout the day, morning afternoon night etc. Other days, like today, I only got them in the morning about three times and have been fine the rest of the day. It's not so bothersome because the pains last so little and the pain isn't all that strong. It's just worrisome that it can be heart related. Thank you for your time

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of anxiety disorder

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I can see that your complaints are consistent with anxiety disorder rather than some cardiac cause.

Absence of pain on exertion, your young age and normal investigation, all are against cardiac cause.

Multiple attacks with no apparent precipitating/ triggering factors are more suggestive of anxiety problem.

I suggest discussing about an addition of a long acting benzodiazepines and beta blocker with your treating consultant.

welcome for further queries.
