What Causes Spotting During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: I am 12 weeks 4 days pregnant and had just had a healthy scan with a heart beat 4 days ago. I've been constipated and finally found some relief but I was straining - afterwards I found a pinprick of blood and a streak of pink on the toilet paper and then nothing else. The next day I was straining to pee and there was a streak of light/faint blood and a very small blood clot the size of a pinprick on the toilet paper and then no issues since - should I be concerned? My doctors office isn't open today. Could I have burst a blood vessel in the cervix?

Brief Answer:
Source of bleeding should be determined.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

The cause of the bleeding should be determined, so, if you find the bleeding persistently, please contact your health care provider.

The most likely cause in the current scenario could be either a traumatized anal mucosa due to bowel constipation and straining efforts causing pressure or a possible fissure. in any case, the bleeding would be fresh. If you notice any old blood, it is more likely to have a different origin.

Please see your specialist as soon as possible to identify the source of the bleeding. Take absolute bed rest, consume plenty of liquids, fresh fruit and vegetables and see that you have easy bowel movement. Do not strain at all. Avoid sexual intercourse, travel and lifting weights.

There should not be any issue with your ongoing pregnancy with the current symptoms, since the origin of the bleeding could more likely be anal. If you have a burst vessel in the cervix, which is highly unlikely, you would be bleeding profusely and continuously.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

Ok thanks so much! Do you think it would be ok to contact my doctor tomorrow when she's in? Otherwise I would have to call the emergency line and I'm not sure this justifies as a true emergency since I haven't experienced any bleeding since.

Thank you
