What Causes Spitting Up Blood?

default
Posted on Fri, 26 Dec 2014
Question: my doctor says I have Gerd or something with acid. he asked me if there was ever blood when I throw up. I said no but I lied and don't even know why. There was a bit of streaks of blood not much but it was always in my mucus afterwards and a bit in the vomit. Just streaks. Is it very important now even if the vomiting and the bleeding stopped on the meds he put me on. Do I really need to tell him and is there anything else it could be besides Gerd because of the blood.

Brief Answer:
You must discuss the bleeding in vomit with your doctors.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail and understand your concern about the streaks of blood in your vomit.

There is a possibility of gastritis and stomach ulcers that can cause the bleeding. Had you informed them about the bleeding then an upper gastroduodenal endoscopy would have been done. Even now it is not late and you can discuss with your doctors and get an endoscopy done to confirm the source of bleeding.

If ignored right now, it can cause a serious problem suddenly and this can happen even if your bleeding has stopped after taking medications.

Please be clear with your doctor and tell him about the bleeding and that you would like it investigated in detail.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
You can wait and watch for a couple of months.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

Dark brown streaks can be altered blood which is mixed with foods. I certainly understand your situation and that you do not want any further tests. Blood tests and ultrasound scan can remain normal when a patient has stomach ulcers and any blood deficiencies can be identified only in later stages.

You can wait and watch for the next couple of months and if you continue to get dark brown streaks in vomit then the best solution is to discuss with your doctors and take more tests. In an emergency please consult your doctors immediately.

Till then please continue taking prescribed medications and avoid alcohol and spicy foods. Also please do not stay hungry for a long time.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
