What Causes Sore Throat After Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Jul 2014
Question: I had unprotected oral sex (cunnilingus) early Friday morning. I began noticing a sore throat later Monday night, but didn't think too much of it as I've been having some drainage from allergies.
I woke up to it being much worse Tuesday morning and made an appointment to see my primary care physician.
He believes it's an early tonsillar abscess and has placed me on Omnicef and prednisone.
My question is, could this be caused by the oral sex and I need to be tested again as well add my partner, or could a CPAP machine long overdue for new supplies be the culprit?
I should also note that I used my CPAP machine for the first time in about a week on Sunday night, the day before my symptoms appeared.

Brief Answer:
may be routine upper respiratory tract infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and thanks for using healthcaremagic,

Peritonsillitis (inflammation around the tonsil) and subsequent tonsillar abscess is a complication of tonsillitis. It is not caused by oral sex.
If you are sharing a CPAP machine then infections can be transferred from one user to another. If you are the only user then there is no chance of getting it through the machine.

I would have preferred penicillin group of antibiotics for peritonsillitis; but your doctor would know about the sensitivity of the organisms prevalent in your area, so please continue to take the antibiotics religiuosly.

Do warm salt water gargling and take an anti inflammatory like ibuprofen to reduce the pain and swelling.

Report immediately to your doctor if the pain increases suddenly or if you are unable to open your mouth or speak properly.
