What Causes Soft Stool With Urgency To Pass The Motion In Diabetic Patient?

default
Posted on Sat, 24 May 2014
Question: I am a diabetic with uncontrolled glucose. My last visit to a doctor told me my a1c is 11.5. My medicines were changed a week ago. I'm on 1000 mg metformin and 5 mg onglyzia once daily (taken at night). In the last 3 days or so, my stool has become very soft with what looks to be undigested shredded lettuce floating in have toilet. Bowel movements have urgency to them with cramps preceding. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Side effect of drugs or acute gastroenteritis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Having soft stool with urgency to pass the motion might be related to:
- medications you are taking for diabetes (metformin in high dose and onglyza)
- acute gastroenteritis if you are also having fever or other flu-like symptoms
- any new foods you have been introduced prior to diarrhea

I advise to:
- drink plenty of fluids and O.R.S. to prevent dehydration
- take tasectan to stop diarrhea
- start taking probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora
- have light meals (soup, curd, yogurt, etc.)
- some of my patients have reported to get relieved after eating a well-boiled egg with oregano; you can try it and hope it will be ok for you too.

If symptoms will not subside in a few days, should contact your physician for further evaluation.

Wish fast recovery! Do write me back if you have further queries!

What does O.R.S. mean?

Brief Answer:
Oral rehydration salt...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

O.R.S. = oral rehydration salt

It consists of dry salts powder. You should pour in water and drink it all the day until symptoms improve. It can rehydrate your body because you might be losing electrolytes and fluids when having increased frequency of bowel movements (diarrhea).

Hope it answered to your questions! Let me know if you need further clarifications!
Wish fast recovery!
