Posted on Thu, 19 Jun 2014
Question: While playing basketball, when my hand was raised up above my shoulder it got accidentally pulled back and i faced very huge pain and felt breathlessness. It felt like it was dislocated, i could not move by hand by a inch, after some time i felt it came back to its position and i felt relieved, but the pain was there for a few days, it used to pain even if i sleep on that side. now everytime i raise my hand and do some fast action like smashing while playing TT or badminton i get the huge pain again and it takes time to settle

Brief Answer:
Avoid games.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

You have given history that your x-ray shows nothing, it means you have soft tissue injury.

You should try to avoid playing any type of game upto 2 weeks. Soft tissue injuries usually take 2 -3 weeks to heal if you start playing at this moment then healing would be delayed.

I would start aceclofenac+thiocolchicoside three times a day along with multivitamin once a day.

I advise you to wear wrist brace which incorporate your hand in resting position. This will allow the soft tissue to rest and healing will be faster.

Apply cold sponging for 30 mins in morning and evening for 3-5 days.

Take diet rich in protein.

I hope it helps.

Thanks.

Hi doctor,

Wanted to get it to your notice that this incident happened more than 8 months back, then i had taken rest for 3 months after that when i started playing again my hand got stuck again

Also its not the wrist as u mentioned, its my shoulder

Hence i stopped playing for 4 months now, 2 weeks back when i put my hand behind my head while sleeping, my hand got stuck again. and this is happening more frequently when i move my hand above my head and back at one particular position and it feels like shoulder dislocated and the pain is unbearable. After 4-5 days the pain subsides and there is no pain at all ever

Also, I think there is no band which i can wear to keep the shoulder intact. is there one?

Also will MRI scan help to identify tissue or ligament injury

This thing is scaring me and i feel crippled, i am more of a sportsperson. Need to get back fast to the outer world

Brief Answer:
Get MRI scan done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query again my friend.

You problem can be exactly diagnosed by MRI scan of shoulder and diagnostic arthroscopy. There is definitely soft tissue injury in your shoulder which can be treated arthroscopically. Because you are a sportsperson it will help you a lot.

At this stage no brace would help you if you want to play games, otherwise its ok.

I hope you have got your answer.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Do shoulder strengthening exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for you response my friend.

You can do shoulder strengthening exercises as uploaded on you-tube. But try to avoid playing games at this moment. You can eat fruits which are rich in vitamins especially C and B12, walnuts etc these will definitely enhance your healing of tissues. Avoid alcohol and smoking as much as you can as these delays healing.
