What Causes Sharp Pain In The Upper Left Quadrant Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: For a month or more I have experienced sharp, stabbing type pains in the upper Left sided quadrant.Have fallen face down and might have hit that side, but no other traumas. Am very stressed over probable relocation to a different state with my 35yo schizophrenic son. I sometimes awaken at night with these throbbing pains. Broke ankle on 9/11/ in a fall and surgery was on 9/23 to fix it. Have taken lithium for over a decade and being weaned off by psychiatrist. Use CPAP for sleep apnea and have Type2 diabetes under control.

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound required

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.
If there was trauma of this part of abdomen then the first thing to rule out is splenic injury. This injury may manifest as acute or subacute or even chronic. There may be small tear in spleen and hematoma which may cause symptoms you describe even months after initial injury. Secondly, it may be pleurodinia of the left lower part of pleura and this is usually caused by pneumonia and such pain would be aggravated during the inspiration. And third, this may be related to gastritis or pancreatitis, although this is usually felt in epigastrium.
If you ask me, i think it would be good to do some tests before relocation, and these include ultrasound, pancreatic enzymes and lungs xrays. it will show us if some of disorders that i ve mentioned are causing this pain. Wish you good health. Regards
