What Causes Sharp Pain In Left Calf Muscle Post Intake Of Ciprofloxacin?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Mar 2016
Question: I am taking 250 mg ciprofloxacin twice a day. Yesterday while light easy jumping up and down i felt a sharp pain in my left calf muscle. It hurt very bad to the point I cannot walk. Today in that left calf muscle, there is chronic dull burning pain and also a sharp unbearable pain when I try to walk normally. It is also painful to touch. I am relatively healthy and never had such a problem before. I read on the ciprofloxacin bottle that this might be a serious side effect. Is this likely related? What should I do? What are some treatments for my calf muscle?

Brief Answer:
Hot compress will help

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the calf muscle that you are having is likely to be related to muscle cramps that can be seen due to ciprofloxacin or a sudden exercise. This pain will subside with hot compress and local application of analgesic gel. In case the pain is persistent then you can get an oral muscle relaxant prescribed.
This is not likely to be a serious issue. It is best to self monitor the area and do a hot compress and see if it subsides in a day or two.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for your reply. Can I continue taking Ciprofloxacin? When can I start exercise again (running and jumping)?
