What Causes Sharp Pain From Lower Buttocks Down The Legs?
Question: I have sharp pain that starts in my lower buttocks and runs down my leg. it comes and goes doesnt matter what i am doing it comes at all times it feels like an electric current is running down my leg. it begins almost at crack in buttocks and then runs down the leg.

the pain started about a year ago right after i broke ankle on other foot. yes to numbness and weakness in ankle. no i never had this time of sharp pain before. yes i have diabetes but take medications and checkups as requested by dod. this sharp pain happens if i am sitting, laying down walking or driving. it also happens when i turn in bed. nothing seems to accelirate it or ease it.

Hello madam,
I have studied your case and I believe that you are having disc herniation in spine. This disc is causing nerve compression in back. This leads to sharp shooting pain in leg. Nerve compression is also causing numbness in ankle. It is good that your Diabetes is under control, as poor sugar control also damages nerve.
To confirm this diagnosis, I would suggest you to get MRI of the spine. This will tell us about site and size of disc herniation and nerve compression.
Till you get your MRI, I would recommend you following.
1. In my patients with such pain I advice tablet Pregabalin and Methylcobal.
2. Bed rest. Avoid any weight lifting.
3. In severe pain Methyl predinisolone injection can be given after consulting with your doctor.
Please get MRI as early as possible. According to MRI your further management can be planned.Let me know if you want to ask any other question.
