What Causes Sharp Fall In T3 Levels After Taking Liothyronine?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Nov 2015
Question: I had thyroidectomy done 20 years ago....7/8 of gland removed. My T3 levels have come back as below normal range.....I stopped Lithium approx three months ago. Was given Liothyronine three months ago but stopped it after a week as scared by a report I'd seen by a dr kris keller saying that you shouldn't AT FIRST add in T3 because it was body trying to rectify itself.
went back to GP two weeks ago as tired and depressed and have severe anxiety....they again gave me Liothyronine....again I took it only for a week as scared of taking a new thryoid hormone after twenty years of thryoxin only. Last week my T3 had come up by one point to 2.8 which is still below the normal range......was this because I took the Liothyronine for a week? probably - i don't know.
other people would probably just swallow it and be happy to take it but because of my severe anxiety I am obsessing about what I read on the internet about T3. I am exhausted, depressed and severely anxious. am I better to continue with the Liothyronine as advised by my GP? best regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
T3

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to hear about your anxiety.

I would like to advise you that most endocrinologists world over do not prefer to prescribe Liothyronine at all.

The reason is that scientific evidence in published medical literature is overwhelmingly in favour of XXXXXXX thyroxine.

So if your TSH and Free T4 are in target range as intended by your endocrinologists, then it is best to remain on a steady dose of XXXXXXX thyroxine alone
