What Causes Severe Cough And Cold In Children With Heart Problems?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Sep 2016
Question: Hi. I have a 2 year old son. He is a AVSD cardiac patient and underwent 2 open heart surgeries, the latest surgery was 4 months ago. He is currently having severe cough and cold. My doctor prescribed him an antibiotic MOXYKIND CV FORTE and PREDNISOLONE syrup. I am giving him the medicines from last 3 days, however his cough doesn't seem to come down. When he gets up in the morning he coughs continously for 2 to 3 hours and gets tired. Is it good to do nebulization with budecort and levolin to ease his discomfort? I am asking because he generally gets up in the middle of the night and coughs continuously and fitted not sleep.

Also can you suggest any sleep medicine. He is severely insomniac and does not sleep at all.

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concerns but don't worry. The likely reason for your child's symptoms can be allergic bronchitis or pulmonary congestion secondary to cardiac insufficiency. If AVSD is completely repaired then chances of allergic bronchitis are more likely.

I would recommend you to start with levolin nebulisations (6 hourly) and budecort nebulisations (12 hourly). There is no role of moxikind CV forte if he is afebrile and asymptomatic during day time. Avoid oral prednisolone at present and use it only if the response to nebulisations is insufficient. His sleep will improve once the condition stabilize. Avoid unnecessary sleep inducing medications. Follow sleep hygiene and avoid long daytime naps.

It's advisable to go for his clinical evaluation by pediatric cardiologist and chest X Ray to rule out cardiac cause for symptoms.

Hopefully it will be of help. I would be happy to help you out in any further questions.
Take care
