What Causes Severe Cough After Accidental Aspiration Of Water Into The Lungs?

Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 2016
Question: Drank water this morning, some went down the wrong pipe and started coughing followed by major weakness in both arms and heaviness in my head and thought I would pass out before I got laid down. Had some tightness in my chest for a few minutes. After a few minutes those symptoms subsided followed by a shimmering of light in the outer edges of my vision. Since then that has subsided as well.

Brief Answer:
Not a foreign body. No need to worry about.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

It seems like a small part of water has passed in the lungs and the cough is a compensatory mechanism to turn it back.

Since everything has subsided, you don't need to worry about. If it was a foreign body that is stucked in the lungs I would suggest and x-ray but its not needed in this case if you don't have any symptoms.

The mild changes of vision have happened because of the short luck of supply with oxygen but that was just temporary.

Hope this is helpful.
