What Causes Severe PMS Symptoms After Taking Plan-B?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: Hi I had unsafe sex on day 9 of my cycle. I took plan b within an hour of the accident. Now it's been 11 days and I'm having really bad pms symptoms. My period is not due for another week. Is this normal? How effective is lab b before ovulation?
Thanks for your help

Brief Answer:
Low chance of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Chances of pregnancy are minimal. You took Plan B on time it will give you more than 95% protection against unwanted pregnancy and is very effective. The PMS type symptoms are due to side effects related to plan b pill use and will subside with time. Since 11 days have elapsed since the unsafe sex , you should get a pregnancy test done to be more sure and have peace of mind as symptoms alone cant be used to confirm or rule out pregnancy.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Plan B commonly alters the normal expected date of periods. It can both pre pone or postpone your periods up to 10 days. So its pretty normal. If however you miss your period and you have been previously regular with your cycle then you should do a pregnancy test on the first day of your missed period to be more sure.

Thanks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again Madam.

Let me explain the relation of ovulation to lessen your anxiety. Going by your description , you have a 28 day cycle and if you are regular then your ovulation day is round about day 14 most likely. You had un protected sex on day 9 of the cycle. You had sex in a relatively safer period plus you took the pill on time and your pregnancy test was also negative. You should repeat the pregnancy test if you miss your period on 11th or 12th to be sure. Even missing a period can be related to anxiety and stress associated with anticipation of pregnancy. But you can relax as your chance of pregnancy is very low. I can understand that its frustrating to not find a yes and no answer at this stage. You can keep in touch till you get through this. For the time being I would advise you to try to avoid stress that may affect your menstrual cycle regularity.

Let me know if you have any query.

Brief Answer:
Most welcome

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

That's good. Anyways do get a pregnancy test if its not a normal period e.g too heavy or too light, as many women can confuse abnormal vaginal bleeding with a period. As you are the better judge of your own period, you are safe according to this description and progress.

You are most welcome

Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Hope you are feeling better.

Plan b has the side effect of unpredictable bleeding patterns i.e pre pone or postpone bleeding or no withdrawal bleeding at all, after taking it, thus leading to some anxiety for the user/patient. However it has a 95 percent protection rate w.r.t taking it early, which you did. As you had intercourse on the 9th day of your cycle and 2 pregnancy tests now have become negative. You need not repeat any more pregnancy tests now. To be sure you can repeat the test 21 days after the intercourse.

Let me know if you have any query
