What Causes Right-sided Sharp Pain Below Ribcage While Breathing?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: I hope so. I am having a sharp pain on the right side, bottom of rib cage, more to the back than to the side. Sharp pain when breathing or moving. I do not remember doing anything that would pull a muscle or anything like that. Woke up from a nap yesterday with it. It is quite uncomfortable

Brief Answer:
Investigations are needed as well as an opinion of a General Surgeon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/52 - not visited any Doctor - tried medications - have sharp pain on the right side - more to the back than the side - increases on breathing and moving - woke up with it after a nap yesterday - do not remember anything that would cause a muscle pull or so.

My thoughts:
The cause can be either of these:
- Rubbing of the pleural surfaces primarily or with infection of the lower lung.
- infection of the liver on the posterior area.
- local condition of the ribs, muscles.

The plan would be:
- To get a clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like X-ray of the chest, ultrasonography of the abdomen, tests of blood, urine and stool.
- Further tests for confirmation of the primary diagnosis thus made and to get a proper treatment as per the final diagnosis.

I hope this answers you query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
