What Causes Redness Under Fingernails?

Question: I have red skin under the tips of my finger nails that goes about a quarter inch in on all my nails - I was diagnosed with Hep C in 97 - but sometimes I worry about my longevity even though I've made drastic changes to my diet. Do the red nail tips mean anything? Thanks.
