What Causes Redness In Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: About a week ago the white part of my right eye began to redden. It has gotten worse but is not painful. I have had cataract surgery some time ago and I am concerned that something may be affecting that. Could it be that I have just been staying up too late watching tv? Nothing has happened to the eye nor have I had anything in it. I will be having surgery (Colin) on Wednesday and am concerned that this -problem could upset that surgery. I am unable to see my eye doctor before then.

Brief Answer:
It can be simple hyperemia of conjunctiva.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having redness of right eye. Since it is not painful no need to be worried.
If the other symptoms like watering and discharge are also absent it rules out diseases like conjunctiviits....
And this can be simple hyperemia of conjunctiva which can occur because of lack of sleep or excessive watching television. This will resolve itself or you can use topical vasoconstrictor eye drops.

If possible do send a photo of the affected eye so that I can confirm the diagnosis and advice you more accurately.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

It is 4:30 a.m. and I awoke congested. The eye is still not painful but now crusted and quite bloodshot. I do believe this began from being up very late each night taking care of my husband who has just completed a 28 day hospital intensive care visit.

Brief Answer:
The presence of crusting indicates infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The presence of redness and crusting indicates infection of the eye in the form of conjunctivitis.
This requires treatment by the use of antibiotic eye drops.
I prefer to use antibiotic eye drops like Moxifloxacin eye drops.
It is better to start eye drops early to prevent infection.
