What Causes Redness And Swelling Of Toe And Blue Toenail After Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,

Two days ago, I dropped a ceramic bowl on my large toe. Now, the skin around the nail is reddened and the toenail itself appears to be blue. There is a clear fluid that oozes out of it as well. There's a crack close to my nail bed and the cuticle itself is swollen. What are my courses of action?

Brief Answer:
Need proper care of the wound

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
I have seen the attached picture.
You seem to have developed traumatic wound along with a tear in the nail .
It is important that you take proper care of the wound so as to prevent any infection .
You should keep the affected area clean and dry .
Wash the affected area with lukewarm saline water twice daily.
Apply a topical antibiotic cream like neosporin or mupirocin over the lesion twice daily.
Wear open footwear ,but you can cover the wound with a sterile gauze or cotton .
You can take some anti inflammatory drug like ibuprofen to reduce the associated pain and swelling.
You might need a course of oral antibiotics if the lesion still tends to persist or increase.
