What Causes Recurring Cold And Bronchitis?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Apr 2014
Question: I'm a 33 year old female with a recurring cold/bronchitis since Christmas 2013. I've been treated with 4 rounds of oral antibiotics and most recently, an injection of rocephin with oral Augmentin and Doxycycline. The doctor who is treating me decided to run blood tests, and the following information was provided to me: WBC - 3.6 NEUT% - 39.1% NEUT# - 1.4 LYMPH% - 48.9% LYMPH# - 1.7 ESR - 22 CRP - 1.1 +1 Hypochromia The doctor is thinking I may be suffering from a severe sinus infection which could be responsible for maintaining the cough. At this point, I'm so lost and I just want to feel better. Do you have any recommendations for questions I should ask my doctor? Should I request a consult with a specialist? Even after 5 rounds of antibiotics, I still have a nasty cough with sinus congestion. Your input and guidance is greatly appreciated!

Brief Answer: Please meet your ent doctor! Detailed Answer: Hello I am really worried about your complaints specially considering the fact that you have taken so may antibiotics. please meet your ent doctor ,who will do an endoscopy of your nose and find out what exactly is going on! he may also ask you to do a Ct scan of the sinuses to see the extent of involvement and decide on further course of action. It is likely that the organism causing your infection is resistant to the drugs you have been taking or you have not taken them for sufficient duration of time. Generally i prescribe antibiotics for 3-4 weeks for patients with chronic sinus infection and even after that if they dont resolve , i would advice them to undergo surgical drainage of the sinuses. The hypochromia in your blood report is suggestive of anemia and i would like you to start on some iron supplementation also. Please meet your ent doctor as soon as possible for further advice and guidance. Thanks
