Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: The first occurance I took Gabapentin, that I had taken two years ago for severe carpel tunnel pain in arms shoulders hands. So the gabapentin did relieve the symptoms somewhat.

will this apparent reoccurance last very long? Im 85. First occurance October 20, 2013 through July 2014, but that first time the swelling and sensitivity in the leg lasted and still present.

Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Attempts ot reduce edema of surrounding structures may help.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused due to the median nerve getting trapped between the surrounding structures and the compression results in the pain. I would suggest you to talk to your doctor about taking some diuretics like hydrochlorthiazide which will help in reducing any local edema affecting surrounding structures which could have been the cause of the nerve compression. If that does not help, it is really hard to predict how long the problem would be there and whether it will be relieved without surgical interventions. All I can say is that if hydrochlorthiazide does not help, the recurrence may last long.
