Question: My 5-1/2 year old grandchild has experienced episodes of red spots that look raw. After a while, the spots seem to "dry" up and turn a dark brown. Some time later, they disappear. She has had this on a regular basis since age 1. These are not insect bites. When they first appear (usually one at a time), she says they "hurt" and "itch" but does not have any complaint once they dry up.
Brief Answer:
Atopic dermatitis is possibility
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear.
Welcome to healthcaremagic.
I have read your query and understood your concern for your grandchild.
It seems your grandchild is suffering from a condition known as ATOPIC DERMATITIS. It is an allergic condition of skin characterized by recurrent rash associated with itch.It usually starts in childhood but as the child will grow , the condition will start improving.
The basic reason for this condition is deficiency of some factor in skin which is required for providing hydration to skin.
So, the best remedy for treatment and its prevention is application of liberal amount of moisturizers 4-5 times a day preferably on semi wet body. This will help in retaining water on skin in addition to providing suppleness to skin. Hence will prevent further episodes also.
In acute condition, mild to moderate potency topical steroids can be applied 1-2 times a day over the lesions for maximum of 1-2 weeks.
For symptomatic relief, antihistaminics like cetrizine/ promethazine/ hydroxyzine in night time.
I hope it helps.
Do not worry. The condition will improve will advancing age.
Good luck and stay healthy.
