Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: My wife, she underwent 3 surgeries as of now.
1. To remove ABC benign tumor (Hosmat hospital, bangalore)
2. Underwent knee replacement surgery because tumor removal was not done properly(apollo hospital, Hyderabad) with prosthesis material procured from XXXXXXX
3. After one year, as material got loosened, she again underwent surgery in Apollo, XXXXXXX This time the material is procured from Europe.

After this, we have have baby and have been in normal life. Last 3 weeks, she has be complaining pain in upper part of thigh. We visited doctor in XXXXXXX and took X-ray. As X-ray of now and 1 year back looks similar, doctor prescribed pain killer medicine on SOS basis. As pain persists, we spoke doctor in Apollo, he suggested to take Hifenac-P two times a day. Under this medication, the pain is subsiding only few hours and again having recurrent pain.
When reached out to Doctor in Apollo, he was in impression that it could be either loosening of prosthesis or any internal injury. He also asked us to go for bone scanning.
My question, as she is not having any fever or redness or swelling in replacement area, do you think its related to loosening or internal injury. Also is it come out during bone scanning? Do you also think is there any other issue?

Brief Answer:
More likely to be an internal injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the upper part of thigh with no swelling redness or tenderness or a history of injury in the area can be due to muscle spasm or loosened prosthesis. It can be due to low levels of calcium or vitamin D3 also. It is good that the pain can be controlled with mild pain killers.
It is best to wait for 2 weeks and let the pain subside on its own. It will heal in case it is due to an internal injury. She needs to give rest to leg and avoid excessive exertion till then. In case the pain is persistent or is gradually increasing then a loosened prosthesis is likely and a bone scan is needed to find out if there is any bone damage around the site of prosthesis.
She can add calcium and vitamin D3 supplements to her diet till then.
I hope this answers your query.
