What Causes Recurrent Lump Over Lip?

Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Hello sir,
I am suffering from a recurring small lump on my lower lip since the past 3-4 months. I tried vitamin B 12 supplements but nothing helps much. The lump keeps reducing and growing back to size. It doesn't pain, but is irritating to say the least. Please help.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be Mucus retention cyst

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having recurrent lump over lip.

Based on clinical details and picture, it appears to be mucus retention cyst, which is always occurs secondary to self trauma (self bite).

In chronic cases (more than 3-6 months), oral medications will not help and it requires surgical removal.

I suggest you to to consult ent surgeon, go ahead for the excision.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks for the info sir.
I would like to know whether this cyst has got anything to do with the functioning of the GI tract. Also, please let me know by what duration can I delay the excision, because I am at XXXXXXX now, and will be moving to XXXXXXX in 15-20 days. Would it be a better idea to get it done at XXXXXXX so that any follow up communication can be done there?

Brief Answer:
No connection with gastrointestinal system.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Answers to your queries.

1. No, It is not related to gastrointestinal tract( it occurs exclusively over lips).

2. It can be done (excision), as an elective procedure as per your comfort. Delay will not cause any serious consequences.

3. Yes. It requires follow ups ( better to do in your home town).

All the best. Take care.
