What Causes Recurrent Kidney Infections And UTI In Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: I have an adopted 9 year old daughter in Russia. She has been hospitalized 3 times in the last 2 years with a kidney related issue. Of course,I believe the doctors there are over worked and under educated,a specialist is hard to find...Her doctor claims the muscles around the kidney are not strong enough or slightly out of place, causing her urine to not be expelled completely, resulting in an inflammation and infection...? Although her mother is EXTREMELY diligent in keeping watch, always testing her urine regularly, watching her diet, etc.,this condition returns, persists.Yes,I know it would be best for this young lady to be here in XXXXXXX to see a specialist, not likely to be here soon. This young lady is very active, takes ballerina classes 5 hours per week.I have thought perhaps this stretching and exerting these special positions and movement actually can cause this inflammation, her doctor says no,it is good exercise .........................

Brief Answer:
Don't check urine frequently.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can fully understand your concern.
I must confirm, that your doctor is right in advising regular exercise.
It's not the muscles outside the kidney, that expel it from the kidney to bladder.
The urine is formed after filtration within the kidney, and then expelled out by muscle spasms called peristalsis. There's no external factor involved in this.
If she's been treated 3 times for recurrent urinary infection(UTI), she must've undergone urine routine and culture tests, kidney function tests like creatinine, and ultrasound scan or CT-IVU/,and cystoscopy, if indicated.
These reports are mentioned in the discharge or treatment summary, which you can go through. However, if she develops an UTI,as reported after urine culture, she must be seen by an qualified Urologist, for treatment.
What you can do is, ensure she drinks 4-6 glasses fluids daily.
Also, maintain good genital hygiene. Diet has no role in preventing UTI.
Do not keep checking urine without symptoms.
Wishing her well.
