What Causes Recurrent Blood In Stool And Clot In Leg?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Apr 2015
Question: I had bright red blood in stool and on toilet paper last week. I saw my doc the next day. He did blood work that came back normal. Also, no exterior hemorrhoids or fissure were noted on exam. I had no reoccurring for 7 days, then saw blood again yesterday and today. I am on 20mg Xarelto for a blood clot in leg. I am scheduled to see my Doc again on Tuesday. I am concerned about the weekend if blood continues. Is it okay to wait until Tuesday or should I go to ER if it persists?

Brief Answer:
You can wait

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
First there is no need to go to ER and no need to be worried.
Such bleedings may look dramatic to patient but risk for serious hemorrhage through intestinal tract is negligible. some very rare disease may present emergency, while in majority cases this is something that can be evaluated during longer period.
If hemorrhoids or other anal lesions are ruled out then most commonly we see polyps and angiodysplasias as cause of bleeding. these are both benign issues.
Less common but more serious there can be some inflammatory bowel disease ,and most serious cause would be colon tumor which is last thing to think of but should be ruled out. This can be done only by colonoscopy which shouldnt be urgently done but plan it with your GP.
Till that try to eat high fibre food, more vegetables to soften your stool. Wish you good health. Regards
