Question: ok I am 50 years old woman in great shape, marathon runner years ago, now a currant yoga teacher In the last six months took up speed walking, I move pretty fast. I have noticed some blood near my rectum area when I use the bathroom. I have had six children never hemorrhoids,(natural child birth) I am constipated often and do what I need to , help relieve those symptoms etc.. I had a colonoscopy down two years ago and everything came out great(dr, told me not come back to age 60) So i am not sure if what I have is an onset of hemoroids or rectal bleeding. things you should know, I work in the health field not medical field( never had a hemorrhoid, and my Dad died of colon cancer at 58 about 35 years ago. Any advice on what I should do? thanks XXXX

Brief Answer:
first, do red blood count

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.
I dont thin you should be worried at this point.
Rectal bleeding is in most cases caused by benign conditions such as hemorhoids which can be internal, poylps, angiodysplasie or fisures.
Also, hard stool may cause it as well.
I suggest to do red blood count to verify is there anemia. If yes, you should repeat colonoscopy, especially if we consider that you had it in family. If there is no anemia, I think you should see proctologist to rule out this I ve mentioned above.
Wish you good health. Regards

Thank you. I had some blood work done in July. My iron was low. I take iron supplements. I was anemic when I was pregnant twice. I am not a big meat eater. Since July I have supplemented with leafy greens juices and iron supplement every other day. My next tests should be November for blood work. I do not feel extra tired. Thanks again.
Do you think I should wait till November and see what happens and do you think pounding the pavement for 14 miles a day speed walking would exasperate it. It seems to subside when I take a day off.

Brief Answer:
no need to hurry

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Well nothing serious can happen, this is always minor bleeding and cant lead to serious consequances. This may be sign of some chronic disease, but I suggest to wait and see in next few weeks. Eat easier food, more fluids to soften your stool, you can walk of course as much as you want. If you notice pale skin, weakness, vertigo then you should check your red blood count before. till that, i dont think that iron is required, but you can increase red meat in your diet, blackberries and fish, spinach which are all iron rich. Wish you good health. Regards
