What Causes Rashes On The Elbow And Under The Arms?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 May 2017
Question: My 3 year old had a rash show up yesterday inside of his elbow under his arm and in his arm pit. He's been itching it and it's raised almost like scabby blister like. What could it be? And how can I treat it. He never usually gets any rashes.

Brief Answer:
Looks like hand foot mouth disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I feel by what you describe and after seeing the images, he should be having a - Hand Foot Mouth disease. This is one viral illness among all other exanthemas which can cause fever followed by rash over palms and soles. It is a self-limiting disorder and itching can be really worrisome. I suggest you use any over the counter antihistamine if you have one with you now. You can use Hydroxyzine at 1-2mg/kg/dose (Maximum 10mg) every 6th to 8th hourly for 7 days.
This can even cause some peeling of skin in the next 4-6 weeks and do not worry about it.

Brief Answer:
Eczema or other viral exanthema are other possibilities

Detailed Answer:
Hi....I understand your concern. The look of the lesions was very similar to hand foot mouth disease. It is not imperative that there should be fever.

But at the same time to think about other possibilities are -

1. Eczema - a sort of skin allergy.

2. Any other viral exanthema can also occur like this.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions I will be glad to help you.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
