Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: For the past few days I have been suffering with I believe are anxiety symptoms. I have been the only daughter of 4 who has been taking care of my mother since 2009. Multiple surgeries, cancer etc.
Now she has been going thru bladder (4) cancer. MY neck feels like my heart is in it, my heart beats rapidly, shaking, crying, and slight pain in the area between the left side of my neck to the shoulder . I am 59, female and do suffer from depression and PTS *taking 300mg wellbeutrin.daily. All I have read on the anxiety/panic disorders but these are only to last for a few minutes or so. I have tried breathing techniques, listening to soft music and even tried biking to relieve my feelings. I am also jumpy. Thanks for your help

Brief Answer:
These symptoms are persisting symptoms of anxiety only

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern and I can appreciate your care for your mother. Continuous illness of your mother has also aggravated your anxiety symptoms. The symptoms like rapid heart rate or palpitations, crying spells, shaking, somatic pains in shoulder and neck etc are due to anxiety only. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant and anti anxiety drug but the drug is usually used in mild cases only. If the symptoms are persisting even while on Wellbutrin then as per my opinion there is need to increase the doses of the drug or to replace the drug with some other anti anxiety drug. SSRIs or SNRIs can be used in your case. Fluoxetine, Escitalopram, Sertraline etc are SSRI drugs and these drugs can help to control the symptoms of anxiety effectively. For pains in shoulder and neck medicines like Pregabalin can be used, the drug will control the pain and will also supplement the actions of other anti anxiety drugs.

Relaxation exercises like music therapy or progressive muscle relaxation exercises or breathing exercises can help if done with proper medicines. Apart from this take Omega-3-Fatty acid supplements along with your conventional drugs. These supplements will also help in early recovery.

Benzodiazepines like Clonazepam or Alprazolam can help to control the symptoms of anxiety and will calm you. These medicines when taken in low doses on SOS basis helps to reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

Visit your psychiatrist for these persisting symptoms and take prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.
