Posted on Thu, 14 Apr 2016
Question: I had hardware removal surgery on my right foot 9 days ago. How much bruising is normal? My toes were a normal skin color up until yesterday but now they're a purplish blue color like the rest of my foot.

Brief Answer:
It is due to collection of blood under skin

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to HCM.

I have studied your case and I can assure that you are having collection of blood under skin. It is common and not harmful. If bruising is near toe and foot and not extending beyond ankle then it is not an issue. This happens because as blood get dissolve colour changes from red to blue and then green and yellow.

I hope you are taking pain killers and antibiotics. I would suggest you to use hot water fomentation. Keep it elevated over pillow.

It would be best if you can share an image with me. That will help me to confirm that it is harmless.

I hope this answer will be useful for you.
Let me know if there is any other followup questions.

Thanks

No my surgeon never mentioned antibiotics unless I was given them during the surgery. I completely forgot to mention that I'm on blood thinners due to repeated blood clots.. .xarelto 20mg at breakfast everyday until may at least. How can I send you a picture?

Brief Answer:
Patient on blood thinners may have a little extra bruising

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Patient who are taking blood thinners have a little extra bruising. So that explains cause in your case. You can discuss about need of antibiotic with your doctor, as he is the best judge. I would also suggest you to check if your blood thinners does needs adjustment, That can be done by checking your INR ratio. It should be 1.5 . it is done through blood test.
