What Causes Post-mastectomy Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: My wife's age is 33 years and she diagonised as breast cancer 6 years back. Doctor XXXXXXX XXXXXXX at KIMS, Secunderabad operated and removed one breast completely. They did certain scans and confirmed that the cancer cells are not found in any other parts of the body. But they still suggested for chemotherapy which we did not taken so far. Now after 6 years from the time she got operated, she is feeling pain on the scar since 3 days. No lumps are found on the scar by our naked eye. What would be the reason for this? Do we need to take any medicine for this now? Please suggest and guide us in detail.
Forgot to mention that mammogram is being done every year for the other side of the breast till last year and we did not get any problem in the reports. This year we did not taken the mammogram test yet.

Brief Answer:
unlikely to be disease recurrence

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

As it is already 6 years, recurrence is bit unlikely but not impossible. But again, just pain on the scar without lump or swelling is very much unlike of recurrence. This may be due to some unrecognised trauma or muscle related pain.

She can take some pain-killers for few days, if there is no improvement then she should visit her surgeon to get it diagnosed.

Hope this helps. I will be available to answer further follow-up queries, if any.

Brief Answer:
we use paracetamol often

Detailed Answer:
We often use paracetamol plus or minus anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.

I am afraid I can't give you an exact prescription without examining the patient. You can talk to your house physician regarding this.
