What Causes Popping Sensation Under Rib Cage?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, I'm a 23 year old male, 6-2 220lbs. I've recently noticed an odd popping feeling under my right rib cage. I wouldn't say it causes any pain, but more discomfort. When pushed on, I feel something lower and then the "pop" back can be felt in the same spot or slightly higher (sometimes). I'm nervous it is my liver but I do not have any of the traditional signs of liver disease. I have done my fair share of drinking in the past three years with university and then the year or so following it. But I have recently cut back and now I'm noticing this odd sensation under my rib. I've started noticing it while seated and bending over as well. What could be cause this popping sensation?

Brief Answer:
can be due to rib costochondritis, liver involveme

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.

As per your history I would like to keep some differential diagnosis.
Cause of popping sensation can be due to rib costochondritis, liver involvement or lung involvement.

You may need further investigation to rule out cause of popping sensation.

Ultrasonography abdomen and pelvis along with blood LFT will help in diagnosis.
I will advise to do HRCT chest consulting your treating doctor.

SPECT scan can detect lung involvement in early stage in cases where CT scan is normal. Do you have history of smoking?
You may need blood investigation like ESR, CRP, and CBC.
Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.

No history of smoking. Would it be possible for someone my age to have a liver related issue after 3 years of heavy drinking?

Brief Answer:
Thats good that no history of smoking.

Detailed Answer:
HELLO AGAIN,

Our liver needs enough time to detoxify alcohol,if you overload toxins then it can affect liver early inspite of age.
At your age possibility of liver disease is less. But degree of your heavy drinking will determine how fast your liver is getting damaged.
