Brief Answer:
Seems to be a ligament / muscle injury

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.

Popping in shoulder followed by pain is almost always indicative of a ligament or muscle/tendon sprain around the shoulder.

Shoulder joint is a globular joint surrounded by thin muscles and ligaments all around. Any overstretching of shoulder joint can lead to partial or complete tear of ligaments or tendons.

In your case too, either a muscle or tendon may have injured with or without bony piece avulsion.

Further line of treatment cannot be decided upon until MRI is done. Till then you can take rest, strap your shoulder, take analgesics(Paracetamol or IBUPROFEN) and apply analgesic spray/gel and hot fomentation.

Get back to me when your MRI reports are ready.

I hope the answer was useful.

Thank you.

Kind regards
