What Causes Pitting And Dependant Edema From Eyebrows Into The Hairline?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: I badly sunburned my forehead 2 days ago. I've developed pitting and dependant edema from my eyebrows to approximately two inches into my hairline. The pain is moderate, but more bothersome is that it feels very tight and a sticky fluid is now oozing along the hairline. I am concerned about developing cellulitis. How long should this take to resolve? Can you tell me signs of cellulitis I should look for? And if/when I should seek medical treatment? What treatment would you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Sunburn

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

Acute sunburn can be very painful and discomforting.

If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a short course of an oral steroids e.g Methylprednisolone 32 mg once daily, after breakfast, for a week OR Prednisolone 40 mg once daily, after breakfast, for a week. Oral steroids are rapidly effective and immediately bring down the swelling and discomfort within 24-36 hours.

Since there is oozing as well, it would be appropriate to begin with oral antibiotics and continue for a week.

My choice of oral antibiotic would have been either:

Amoxycillin 500mg in combination with clavulanic acid 125 mg, thrice daily for a week

OR

Cephalexin (Keflex) 500 mg thrice daily for a week

OR

Cefadroxil 500 mg twice daily for a week.

In addition to oral tablets, you could use topical moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate cream, twice daily for a week.

An OTC pain killer/anti-inflammatory e.g ibuprofen or aspirin can be taken twice or thrice daily to relieve the pain and discomfort.

Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen, preferably spf 50+, throughout the day.
