What Causes Phantom Limbs Pain?

Question: Husband 82 yrs of age having fanton pains in legs and feet. Has taken narcotics for about 4 yrs. Would amytryptaline be a suggested form of treatment. Is on gabapentin at the moment, without any positive results.

I am so sorry to hear about this fantom pains that you have reported in your husband. This is typical of neuropathic pain. The main medications to manage this are gabapentin, amytryptylline, and carbamazepine. Response varies from one individual to another and we would need to try new drugs and combinations in efforts to find out what works best for him. In this light, I will actually encourage that he goes on this drug and let's evaluate at a later date to see if it helps or not.
