What Causes Persistent Watery Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: Hi! I already know I have allergies. I live on Zyrtec, Claritin and sudafed. I actually get nauseous if I don't take the zyrtec every day. My issue is that my eyes water really badly, especially first thing in the morning when I wake up. Sometimes it clears up during the day, sometimes it doesn't and I fight all day to keep my eye makeup from washing off. I've tried Pantanol eye drops previously which didn't seem to help any. My ENT gave me Dymista because I got so bad once it develop into bilateral ear infections with a sinus infection. But on a daily basis the dymista doesn't seem to help.

Brief Answer:
Find the cause of allergy first...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical concerns carefully.

1. The very first thing I advise my patients with the same allergy problems as you is to find out what is causing the bad allergy:
- make up?
- detergents?
- humidity?
- foods?
- no specific cause? genetics?

By the way, may I know if you have ever done any allergy testing? Can you refer the results?

2. Sometimes, persistent allergic symptoms might be more related to frequent viral infection rather than allergy itself. In such cases, I highly advise my patients to boost their immune system through:
- eating healthy foods
- taking supplements containing multivitamins and minerals (e.g. vit.C, D, B complex, Zn, Mg, etc.), which are necessary for a normal functioning of body cells

3. I also advise to:
- keep good hygiene of your eyes, especially at bedtime: wash with warm water and hypoallergic soap; rinse with chamomile tea, and then might use eye drops
- get checked from ophtalmologist to rule out eye infection

4. Dymista is a combination of 2 drugs: azelastine (anti-hystaminic) and fluticasone (steroid). I advise not to use on daily basis, but as a complete therapy.

Changing therapy is then, recommended.

Hope it helped!

I have ruled out detergents, makeup, foods, etc. Humidity? haha! I live in Louisiana!! I actually have considered allergy testing. My ENT recommended it when he was treating my sinus infection. My son had the testing years ago, but can't take the injections because he takes Strattera (can't take stimulants). He does fine without them.. My allergies only actually began about 5 years ago. My dermatologist diagnosed a new environmental allergy I had developed. (skin, scalp burning and itching) I never had problems before then. Now my eyes are doing their thing...
I thought my original question was going to an ENT.....

Brief Answer:
Allergy testing to determine the right cause to your allergy....

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

1. You are now reporting that the allergy thing started 5 years ago. Was that because you changed:
- your place of living?
- your working place?
- any other disease you might have suffered debilitating your immune system resulting in "allergy"?

2. With regards to your eyes, have you ever run or did your doctor ever advise to run eye swab culture to rule out possible pathological bacterial/fungal infection?

3. If you need to consult with ENT specialist, you can use another option to contact ENT specialist directly.

Thank you!
