What Causes Persistent Stuffy Nose, Yellow Mucus, Eye Boogers And Headache?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jun 2016
Question: Hi, I have had an intermittent stuffy nose for over 4 weeks, usually when sleeping at night I have to breath through my mouth. I have had yellow and green crusty boogers for 4 weeks (not runny). Now I am getting eye boogers in the corner of my eyes. 2 weeks ago I went to a walk in and they told me it was viral, but it still not gone away. I do not have classis sinus infection symptoms such as pain or headaches. My wife thinks I have some type of infection and need antibiotics.

Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for sending the question.

It certainly sounds like you have significant inflammation in your nasal and sinus passage ways. This could be due to allergies, viruses and in some cases bacteria.

Most commonly this is related to viruses and allergies. I would recommend that you consider using an over-the-counter Cortizone containing nasal spray.available brands include Flonase and Nasonex. generally you can do one spray in each nostril twice daily. It should lead to significant and progressive improvement of your symptoms.

I would consider trying one of these nasal sprays for a few days before trying to seek antibiotics.

I don't necessarily think antibiotics will help you feel better at this point. In addition try to stay well hydrated also. I would limit intake of dairy products is this case , cause they increase in secretions as well.

If after trying to nasal spray you still feel ill in for five days then you might try to seek the opinion of a local physician who could consider an antibiotic if they believe it is indicated.

Thank you again for sending the question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
